Mietek Wirkus, a Polish bioenergy therapist was born in 1939. His unusual healing gift was discovered when he was a child. In those days no one called this type of work "bioenergy therapy." This term has only been used since Professor Zdenek Rejdak from Charles University in Prague proposed a definition of bioenergy therapy, as a "method ... based on transmission of energy from one organism to another in order to improve the individual's condition." Technically defined, bioenergy therapy involves the replenishment of human "bio-currents" and the elimination of energy disturbances and blocks. Bio-currents are manifested in the bioenergy field surrounding the body, and have been identified through the use of Kirlian photography.

In 1982 bioenergy therapy was officially approved in Poland to supplement the work of highly trained medical professionals. Mr. Wirkus received his professional license shortly thereafter. His natural biotherapeutical ability and skills were confirmed by the All Polish Scientific Council for Biotherapeutics. The Psychotronics Society in Warsaw certified that he had successfully undergone the required instructive and verifying procedures in the field of bioenergy therapy as well as the training period and the theoretical examination before the Verifying Commission of the Psychotronics Society of Warsaw.

While in Poland, Mr. Wirkus was one of the first professional bioenergy therapists employed by a medical center to complement the work of physicians. He worked twice a week with the medical clinic "IZIS," and twice each week in the medical clinic of The Society for Deaf Children. In addition he worked one day a week in the medical clinic of the consulting firm Polifoto Company, and once a week in the bio-energy section of the Psychotronics Society. In an average week, Mr. Wirkus would work with 300 to 400 people.

Mietek Wirkus arrived in the United States from Warsaw in September 1985, along with his wife Margaret, a journalist and linguist who now assists in his work. Since his arrival, Mr. Wirkus biotherapeutic ability has been studied by different medical and psychiatric professionals in the United States. In response to increasing requests, Mr. Wirkus has conducted workshops and professional groups throughout the United States including the Menninger Foundation of Kansas, the Institute of Noetic Sciences in San Francisco, the A.R.E. Clinic of Phoenix, Arizona, and the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine of Boulder, Colorado.

From their base in the Washington, DC. area, classes are held for physicians, nurses, medical technicians, body work therapists and other professionals. Private consultations are held three days a week in his Bethesda, MD. office. During a session, Mr. Wirkus conducts a careful examination of the individual`s energy field. As necessary, he will use his own energy to restore that person`s depleted energy flow to help their body achieve the balance that makes healing possible. He does not offer himself as a practitioner of medicine nor as a substitute for professional care. Rather, he insists that people follow the advice of the professionals who referred them.

A growing interest in the use of bioenergy therapy has recently resulted in a variety of research proposals from scientists, psychologists, physicians and bio-feedback professionals. The Wirkus Bioenergy Foundation was established with a non-profit status to further these educational and research efforts. In June 1992 the Foundation created a VHS video cassette entitled: "Bioenergy: A Healing Art."

"Bioenergy: A Healing Art" is an expansive, provocative and engaging look at bioenergy and its dramatic ability to facilitate healing. Known in other cultures by different names (prana, chi, etc.) ancient healers long ago discovered that vital energy could be directed and manipulated, and its flow transferred to those with a deficiency. This excellent video explores the profound realities of bioenergy healing through the dramatic stories of clients and interviews with Mietek Wirkus and his students. The program includes the studies and candid analysis of Elmer Green Ph.D., Robert O. Becker, M.D. (author of The Body Electric) and Steven L. Fahrion, Ph.D., offering insight into those aspects of the bioenergy phenomenon which have yet to be understood scientifically.

Research on bioenergy has progressed in many countries and with funding, the Foundation hopes to encourage even greater discoveries using the vast technology which is available in the United States. Tax deductible donations are accepted and appreciated at all times.
